Purpose
The purpose of the workshop is to benchmark the capabilities of different ship
manoeuvring simulation methods including systems and CFD based methods
through comparisons with results for tanker, container ship and surface
combatant hull form test cases. Systems based methods will be compared with
free-model test data using provided PMM and CMT (circular motion mechanism/rotating-arm) data, whereas CFD
based methods will be compared with both PMM/CMT and free-model
test data. The comparisons for the free-model tests will be blind
in the sense that the free-model test data will not be provided prior to the
workshop.
Test cases
MOERI (formerly KRISO) KVLCC1 and KVLCC2 tanker hull
forms are used, which enable assessment capabilities for relatively
course stable and unstable stern shape variations. MOERI KCS and DTMB 5415 are used for container ship
and surface combatant. KVLCC2,
KCS and DTMB 5415 are already established test cases for resistance and
propulsion.
The
physical model tests either have been or will be conducted by various
participating towing tanks and institutes including MOERI (Korea), NMRI
(Japan), INSEAN (Italy), HSVA and SVA (Germany), BEC (France), CEHIPAR
(Spain), MARIN (Holland), BSHC
(Bulgaria), IIHR (USA) and FORCE Technology (Denmark).
For
each of the four hulls at least PMM tests in deep water with the appended
hull as well as free model tests will be performed. For the KVLCC’s and
5415 additional tests are planned including shallow water PMM tests, bare
hull PMM tests and CMT tests. An overview of the current test
plan is given in Table 1.

Columns headers in grey are
“focus tests” that form the primary basis for comparison at the
workshop.
Refer
to the Links and Reference page under each hull for information on the point of contact at each
tank/institute.
The
ship geometries, test conditions and specific test programs to be used for the workshop
are available at this web site under each specific hull: KVLCC,
KCS, 5415. It will also be possible to download the test
results from this web site when these become available.
All interested parties can download the test results when these become
available. The raw test data is stored on an ftp-server, and
participants should apply for a package of data corresponding to the
specific hull and the specific method they intend to use. The full set
of test data including free test results will be made available for
comparison at the workshop and thereafter it will be possible for all
parties to download this data from the workshop web site.
